PRESS RELEASE :
Somaliland Forum
The Somaliland Forum, an independent
organisation that represents the Somaliland Diaspora, is sending its
condolences to the family and friends of Richard and Enid Eyeington
,who were killed on Monday, 20 Oct.03 by unidentified gunmen in the
Republic of Somaliland. First and foremost, our sympathies are with
the two children and grandchildren, which Richard and Enid have left
behind. In addition, we send our condolences to the staff of SOS
Children’s Village, the organisation for which Richard and Enid
worked, and the British public, in general.
The President of Somaliland, Hon
Dahir Rayale Kahin, as well as the Leaders of the two houses of
Parliament have also sent their condolences to the family and
friends of the diseased; and promised to bring the perpetrators of
these heinous crimes to justice, as soon as possible. In fact, six
persons have already been arrested in connection with these murders,
and we promise to update you on the progress developments of the
case.
It is indeed ironic that the British
public, and also most European and American citizens, the majority
of whom have probably never heard of Somaliland, are introduced to
it in this fashion. However, we would like to re-assure them that
Somaliland is and remains a peaceful country with hospitable people
that welcome visitors and foreigners to their country with open
arms.
It has been 12 years since the
Republic of Somaliland, a former British Protectorate, reclaimed its
sovereignty from the union it entered with Somalia, a former Italian
trustee. During these 12 years, while chaos and anarchy was the norm
in Somalia, Somaliland has been a peaceful and stable country that
has evolved from a primitive clan based system of governance, to a
multi-party democratic system of government. The security and safety
of visitors and foreigners has never an issue. And, as evident from
the British government's advise to its citizens on travel (that it
is safe to travel to Somaliland), hostility against foreigners has
not been on the increase in Somaliland, lately. All around the
world, be it Somaliland or Britain, there are mindless criminals who
have no respect for human life.
Finally, once again, our sympathies
are with the family and friends of Richard and Enid Eyeington,
especially with their two children and grand children, and the
larger family of SOS Children’s Village.
